🌍🍩 Tourism & Doughnut Economics: Yesterday, I had the opportunity to host our first deep dive session on Doughnut Economics and its potential to reshape the tourism sector. Here are some highlights: 1️⃣ Ipoh, Malaysia: Local businesses and government officials are engaging in meaningful conversations about Doughnut Design for business. They're rethinking how to build more regenerative tourism-related enterprises. 2️⃣ Galapagos Islands: In response to the pandemic, the Galapagos has adopted the Doughnut model to create a recovery strategy. They held workshops on regenerative tourism, bringing together a variety of actors. 3️⃣ European Tourism Futures Institute: This research team crafted a study, imagining how the tourism sector might operate if guided by the seven key principles of Doughnut Economics. 4️⃣ Dutch Innovation: Seven destination cities in the Netherlands have used the Doughnut model to challenge the traditional focus on increasing visitor numbers and explore alternative success metrics. 💡 As we move forward into autumn, we will continue our discussions, diving deeper into topics like regenerative design for tourism businesses, the social impacts of tourism, and how to unite various stakeholders across the value chain. 👉 If you’re interested in applying Doughnut Economics to tourism, let’s connect! 🌍 How can food policy councils help shape a just and regenerative food system? After an inspiring two-day gathering in Rome with food policy councils from around the world, I feel hopeful about the future! I learned so much about the vital work these councils do. Whether they are self-organized, part of local governments, or established on a national level, food policy councils unite different voices in the food system to create policies that transform the sector. Some key areas they focus on include: - Addressing food poverty 🍽️ - Promoting agro-ecological food production 🌱 - Advocating against large agrifood players that dominate the market 📉 - Creating educational programs and healthy menus in schools 🍏 During the workshop, we introduced the Doughnut Economics model as a new framework for rethinking the food system. This model, with its holistic and intuitive nature, could be a valuable tool for food policy councils. It can help local councils design food policies that consider all social and ecological impacts of the food system, while providing a simple and accessible common language to create targets and indicators. I am grateful to have worked with such passionate food experts from around the world and to share new ideas about revolutionizing the food sector. 🙏 Thank you to laura Prota and everyone who contributed to this incredible experience! When the economy is reduced to numbers, we lose sight of what matters. This Saturday we’re supporting a local experiment on #OldKentRoad - a #NeighbourhoodPortrait co-created by local artists, community organisers and organisations, venues and school staff. It’s bringing together many groups for a celebratory street party.  And it’s more than an event. It’s a pilot for place-based systems change. Together, we’re exploring: 🧩 How a visual community portrait can inform local projects and perhaps even policy 🌍 How future leaders (like local schoolchildren) shape new narratives 🎨 How creative tools help us redefine economic success This is the Doughnut in action - and we’ll be learning, documenting, and sharing insights with those working across policy, planning, and regenerative development.
